More adventures

Story about possum #2: If fighting with one possum wasn't enough, they found another possum's life to ruin. One morning before dawn, I let my two dogs outside. 15 minutes later, I hear barking. I jump up, run outside, and again, I see my two dogs getting ready to go toe to toe, or paw to paw with a possum. I yell at them, getting them to back away from the possum. The possum just wanted to leave, but he was ready to fight if he had to. I grab Colton, throw him in the house, and go back for Braxton. Braxton apparently thought he was doing a remake of Gladiator, because he wouldnt' let me grab him for anything. After what seemed like an eternity, I was able to put enough distance between the possum and Braxton so that the possum could just leave, but let me tell you....he didn't just pack up and walk away. He slowly and cautiously departed my backyard. Problem solved, no casualties.

Poison Ivy: I have poison ivy in my backyard. My dogs love to run through it. The other morning, I let Brax and Co inside, and I see a long red cut on his side. I freak out, and pour peroxide on it, which is the WRONG thing to do. Not only did my poor dog wimper like crazy, I read that you should let the dog soak in Epsom Salt. Anyway, turns out that it was a really big poison ivy rash. It was really red. So red in fact that after I poured peroxide all over it, I shaved it to get to it better. Now, after much caladryl, the rash is gone, but my dog has a patch of hair missing. I can't take him anywhere until that fur grows back!

A few of their latest adventures

In the last few months, Braxton and Colton have almost killed a possum, got sprayed by a skunk, got into a fight with another possum, got poison ivy, found a snake in the house, and Braxton cut his paw!

Possum story: One night I heard insane barking from the backyard at 10:30 at night. I walk outside, and see that my two dogs have something cornered. I yell at them to come inside, they don't. I run back in to grab a flashlight, by the time I grab it and go back outside. I walk up to them sniffing a bloody, not moving possum. I think it's dead, grab a dust pan and a plastic bag, put the possum in the bag, put the bag in the trash. I quickly Google info about a possum to see if my dogs need shots, etc. only to find out that the possum may not be dead. I quickly run back outside, get the possum out of the bag, and lay him/her by my window in the front yard, and the next morning it was gone. I'm sure it was hurt, but not dead.

Skunk story: One morning while getting dressed for work, I hear barking, and I smell the faint odor of a skunk. I open the back yard to hear barking and wimpering from my two precious dogs. I let them in, and hurriedly throw them both in the tub as I scrub them like there's no tomorrow. Again, I Google instructions on how to rid them of the skunk smell. I bought peroxide, dishwashing soap, and baking soda. I mixed those items together, washed them with the concoction, and it seemed to help. The smell left my house a few days later. This was two months ago, and I can still faintly smell skunk on their faces, because I couldn't wash their faces too good because I didn't want to get soap in their eyes.

More to come....

In the beginning...

In the summer of 2006, I lost my American Eskimo dog of 13 years to old age. People kept trying to talk me into getting another dog, but I needed time to grieve first. By the Spring of 2007, I was ready for a new dog. I got online and did research on the healthiest dogs, and landed on a Jack Russell Terrier or some other kind of dog, I forget. For weeks and weeks I searched for a Jack Russell Terrier that I could purchase. In April of 2007, I found one. I had to drive an hour to get him, but it was worth the drive. For days, I tried to come up with a name for him. Every name I could think of belonged to one of my human friends. I landed on Blakely, then remembered that my mom's best friend's last name is Blakely. I ended up searching baby names and finally landed on Braxton. I didn't know anyone named Braxton....yet, but we'll get to that later. This new puppy was sure expensive! I had to take him to the vet every three weeks to get a new shot, I had to have him dewormed, and the whole shabang! While getting shots, I was getting to know my new little energetic puppy. I went out and bought a book about Jack Russell Terriers, and found out how energetic they were. I'd walk Braxton, play with him, train him, and he'd still be ready for more! Finally, I decided that Braxton needed a friend. I couldn't afford more puppy shots, so I made sure to rescue. Again, I searched and searched and found a rescue organization that was for Beagles, but found what they thought was a Jack Russell Terrier, and took him back to the farm anyway. I took Braxton out to the farm, he met what would soon be his new brother, and my new JR rescue came home with us. Speaking of JR, that's what they named him, and I didn't like the name, so I changed it....to Colton. Braxton and Colton. All I have to do is put them outside, and they run after each other, dig holes, bark at squirrels, and chew up sticks for hours! All I have to do is feed, water them, take them to the dog park every now and then, give them heartworm preventative once a month, shots once a year, and watch them sleep. After I had Colton for a few weeks, a rumor began to circulate that Colton was actually a Rat Terrier. The jury is still out. Take a look and try to figure it out for yourselves. Anyhoo, Braxton and Colton, who shall hereafter be referred to Braxie and Co-Co, are always getting into some sort of trouble, and people seem to enjoy my "Tweets" about it, so I decided to start blogging about their journey through life. I hope that you enjoy reading, and I hope that I enjoy blogging as much as I enjoy laughing at Braxie and Co-Co.
